GRAND CANYON WEST, Arizona — One person died in a tour bus rollover accident involving more than 50 people near the Grand Canyon West Skywalk in northern Arizona on Tuesday, officials said.

Tribal police said the bus overturned at Grand Canyon West on the Hualapai Indian Reservation just before 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Although Grand Canyon West is run by the tribe, it has no operational ties to Grand Canyon National Park, which is managed by the National Park Service.

Fifty-seven people were involved in the rollover. One person died and eight were flown to hospital. Tribal emergency officials said in a statement that an undisclosed number of people with minor injuries were being driven away for treatment.

The names of the dead and details of the injured were not immediately released.

A private tour operator collided with a visitor’s car near the Grand Canyon West parking lot, tribal officials confirmed. They declined to comment further, citing an ongoing investigation.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety assisted tribal police in the accident.

Grand Canyon West is located on the West Rim of the Grand Canyon in northern Mojave County.
