independent news media

This June marks 10 years since 19 firefighters lost their lives in the Yarnell Hill fire.

To honor and remember firefighters, a team of wilderness firefighters and law enforcement partners plan a memorial event in honor of Granite Mountain Hotshot, who died on June 30, 2013. I’ve been working on it since November.

The Granite Mountain Hotshot Memorial Team will host a memorial service at the Yavapai County Courthouse on Friday, June 30 at 3:00 PM. Specific event details are still being worked out, but the team has designed the event to end at 4:32pm.

At the exact time on June 30th each year, the court chimes 19 bells for fallen strongmen.

Information on the commemorative event will be released after the next month as soon as the details are decided.

The City of Prescott has created a public memorial website and will update that site as information becomes available.

Agencies participating in the Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial Team include local, state, and federal collaborators. City of Prescott, Arizona Forestry and Fire Department, Prescott Fire Department, Central Arizona Fire and Medical Department, Prescott National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, various fire departments in the Phoenix area.
