New York City is spending millions of dollars fixing local roads that are in desperate need of repair.
On Wednesday, the governor of Hochul announced that it would commit $100 million in state funds to upgrade roads affected by “extreme weather.” The funds will go towards a project where he will repair 520 miles of roads in his 64 locations across the state.
Locally, the Hudson Valley will undergo very expensive renovations on four major roads. According to the Department of Transportation, the work will not only repair damaged roads, but also prepare them to deal with future extreme weather events. Commissioner Marie-Thérèse Dominguez says weather is a bigger problem these days than it used to be.
New York’s weather is becoming more and more severe, requiring critical and timely maintenance of infrastructure…This funding will renew critical travel routes throughout the state and restore hundreds of miles of roads. to better withstand Mother Nature’s challenges.
The four projects approved in the Hudson Valley region total $13.6 million. $5.2 million will be used to resurface Route 35/202 from the Taconic State Park Interchange to Route 118 in the town of Yorktown. $3.6 million was allocated for repaving Route 52 from Route 311 to Fowler Avenue in the towns of Carmel and Kent.
Ulster County will spend $3.6 million to upgrade Route 28 from Harley Mountain Road to Waukonk Road in the towns of Ulster and Kingston. In Sullivan County, Route 97, half a mile north of the Kirks Road intersection to the Cochecton Town Line in the town of Tusten, will be repaved at his $1.2 million.
Work is expected to begin later this year.
