Benson — Benson High School hosted 16 teams at the 17th Annual Jerry Lee Track and Field Invitational on Friday, April 14th.
The competing Cochise County teams were the Benson Bobcats, Bisbee Pumas, Douglas Bulldogs, St. David Tigers, Tombstone Yellow Jackets, Valley Union Blue Devils and Wilcox Cowboys/Cowgirls.
“The tournament went very well,” said Benson coach Randy Varney. “It takes a lot of work to run an invitation that most people don’t understand. There were a lot of volunteers who came out to help us.” They did a great job running and organizing the competition, it was one of the biggest Jerry Lee Invitationals we’ve had.
The Thatcher Eagles boys rank first with 143.33, Nogales second with 129.50 and Safford third with 118. The Cochise County team was 5th with Benson, 6th Tombstone, 7th Bisbee, 9th Douglas, 11th Wilcox, St. David 12th and Valley Union 14th.
The Thatcher Eagles women tied for first with 179 points, while Benson and Nogales tied for second with 90.5. The other Cochise County teams were Wilcox fourth, Douglas seventh, Tombstone tenth, Valley Union eleventh, Bisbee and St. David his fifteenth.
Placement for the Benson boys was Senior Joseph Akers, second in 400 and second in 800. In the discus he was second, and in the javelin he was fifth. Junior Aaric Myatt in 6th place out of 3,200. Freshman Brax Clough finishes 5th in the pole vault. Freshman Andrew Workman, 8th in 400; Freshman Flint Davis ranks eighth out of 100. 4×100 (Cluff, Workman, Sr. Jake Swies, Davis), 6th. 4×400 (Akers, Workman, Cluff, Davis), third. The 4×800 (Myatt, James Leck, sophomore Buck Garrett, Ramirez) was his fifth.
It was Ryan Clough, first senior in pole vaulting, who placed the Bobcats girls. He finished Junior Trinity Foy, 2nd in 200, 3rd in 100 and 3rd in 100 hurdles. Shannon Frost, a sophomore, ranked 3rd in her 400 and 7th in 200. Freshman Rayleigh Olsen takes 3rd place in the 300 hurdles. Junior Ella Allred, 4th in the 800. Senior Briley Barney, his fifth in the pole vault. Freshman Araya Stanley finished 6th at the 400 hurdles and 7th at the 300 hurdles. Junior Willow Pralgo, 4th in 3200. Junior Lauren McBride, 5th in 300 hurdles and 6th in 100 hurdles. Junior Brooklyn Peterson, he finished 6th in the triple jump. Senior Madison England, 7th in high jump. Senior Brooke Schmidt, 7th in pole vault. 4×100 (Cluff, McBride, England, Foy), 3rd. And he 4×400 (Frost, Allred, Stanley, Clough), third.
Bisbee’s placement of the boys was second-place senior Ramon Roya with 3,200. Sophomore Mason Richardson, his fourth in the pole vault. Sophomore Spencer Anthony ranks his fourth in discus and his sixth in pole vault. 4×400 (Roya, freshman Luis Saavedra, Richardson, senior Jesus Ramirez Moreno), 8th. 4×800 (Loya, Ramirez Moreno, Richardson, freshman Angel Yepiz), second.
Sophomore Kitana Rogers finished fifth in the high jump and eighth in the pole vault among the Pumas girls.
Junior Geomar Reyes, fourth in the 200, was placed in place of the Douglas boys. Junior Christian Martinez, seventh in the pole vault. Junior Dakota Hernandez, he finished 8th in the pole vault. 4×100 (Hernandez, Sr. Alejandro Corrales, Reyes, Martinez), second. 4×400 (Reyes, Hernandez, Martinez, Corrales), fourth. 4×800 (Gerald Burgos sophomore, Mario Villalobos sophomore, Brandon Alvayo senior, Caleb Peterson junior), 3rd place.
Bulldog girl placement was sophomore Ana Bojorquez, who was first with 3,200 and sixth with 1,600. Freshman Alexis Haimes is fourth in the 100 hurdles and eighth in the 300 hurdles. Junior Abigail Marin, 8th in the 400; 4×100 (senior Valentina Corella, senior Carla Burgos, freshman Coral Sainz, Marin), 6th. 4×400 (Valentina, Burgos, Marin, Sainz), 4th. 4×800 (Sr. Mia Verdugo, Bojorquez, Jr. Mercedes Wrangel, Jr. Annelisa Madero), 3rd.
St David’s placement for the boys was senior Coy Richardson, fourth in the high jump and eighth in the 300 hurdles.
The women’s Tigers team featured Anissa Jaquez, who placed 6th in the high jump and 6th in the discus.
Placement for the Tombstone boys was Junior Anthony Pirro in 5th place with 3,200. Junior Malachi Keller, 2nd in high jump, 4th in long jump, 6th in 300 hurdles. Advanced Isaac Villalobos, 7th in shot put and 8th in discus. 4×100 (J’miah Wallis sophomore, Jack Fehrenbacher sophomore, Hunter Griesemer sophomore, Logan Masters sophomore), 4th. 4×400 (Sophomore Ivan Amaya, Sophomore Caiden Bidgood, Fehrenbacher, Sophomore Joshua Givens), 6th. 4×800 (Jr. Landon Pease, Sophomore Ethan Bercott, Jr. Valen Morales, Pilo), 4th
The yellowjacket girl was senior Rubi Luinstra, who placed 5th in 400, 7th in 100 and 8th in triple jump. She is a junior colleague, 4th in 1,600 and 8th in 800. Freshman Madley Wood, sixth in the 100 hurdles. Sophomore Rachel Thursby was in the high jump and she was fifth.
The Valley Union Boys winner was senior Will Smith, who finished seventh in the high jump and eighth in the long jump.
The placement of the girls in the Valley Union was Jaime Vazquez, who was second in discus and eighth in shot put. Sophomore Angela Vazquez placed eighth in the discus and fifth in the javelin.
Placement for the Wilcox boys was senior Ulisses Izazaga, fourth in 400s and fifth in 800s. Jr. Jacob Kaufmann, he finished 6th in the high jump. Sophomore Caden Hooper is the long jumper and he is 7th. 4×100 (Sr. Alexis Hernandez, freshman Sawyer Thompson, Jr. Yarya Hunter, Hooper), 5th. and 4×400 (Hernandez, Kaufman, Izazzaga, sophomore Alan Solis), 5th.
Wilcox’s girls placement was first in 100, first in 200, first in javelin and third in long jump, senior Mary Thompson. Freshman Yehira Galaz is third in shot put and fourth in discus. She was junior Kathryn Bell, 2nd in shot put and 5th in discus. Junior Carissa Riggs, 7th in the Javelin. 4×100 (Sophomore Annie Allred, Sophomore Monica Lewis, Sophomore Jocelyn Paz, Riggs), 5th.
Benson, Bisbee, St. David and Willcox will compete at the Safford Rotary Invitational on Friday, April 21st. Douglas, Tombstone and the Valley Union will compete in the Southern Arizona Championship on Friday, April 21st at Marana Mountain View High School.
