170 Dems Vote Against GOP-Led Bill That Would Require Illegal Immigrant Criminals To Be Detained

On Thursday, more than half of the House Democratic caucus voted against the Laken Riley Act, a bill named after the murdered nursing student that would force detention for illegal immigrants who commit crimes in the United States.

Riley was killed on February 22 by Jose Antonio Ibarra, a Venezuelan national who entered the United States illegally in 2022 and was arrested in New York City until his release. In response, the House passed a bill named in Mr. Riley's honor that would require the detention of such persons for misdemeanors such as burglary, theft, theft, and shoplifting, but House Democrats 170 people voted against it. “Layken had a kind and gentle personality and was loved by all around her. May her memory be a blessing. Unfortunately, the majority of us are united in expressing our sadness at the tragic death of Ms. Layken. Instead, they appear to be trying to use her death for yet another partisan political stunt,” said Democratic Congressman Jerrold Nadler of New York, who led debate on the opposing bill. , on the House floor just before the bill was passed. “Republicans appear to be scoring cheap political points in an election year by combining language in existing, unrelated bills that target and scapegoat immigrants while doing nothing to address the situation at the border. . This approach is fundamentally disingenuous.”
