Snow piled up in downtown Flagstaff on Thursday, January 4, 2024, the day after the storm.

Snow plows were clearing roads throughout northern Arizona early Thursday morning after the first snow of the season fell.

It started snowing around 5pm on Wednesday. By 9:30 p.m., Interstate 40 was closed between Kingman and Flagstaff after a weather-related crash and slide.

It reopened just before midnight, marking the start of a new snow season in northern Arizona. Flagstaff only received a few inches and did not affect school start times.

A second, stronger snowstorm is expected on Sunday. The snow is expected to reach 4,000 feet in the northern part of the state, and meteorologists are already warning of dangerous driving conditions that day.
