The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has reported that a student died Wednesday following a series of self-inflicted injuries sustained after shooting two classmates at Evergreen High School. The incident occurred around midday in this relatively quiet mountain town located about 30 minutes from Denver.
According to Jackie Kelly, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, investigators are currently addressing “multiple scenes” both inside and outside the school. The weapon involved in the shooting was identified as a revolver.
Kelly stated, “All three (students) who were brought straight from school suffered gunshot wounds, and I think that’s all.” The two students who were injured are now hospitalized.
Meanwhile, Colorado Governor Jared Polis mentioned in a statement that he is “examining the situation” and that state officials are providing assistance. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also have agents on the scene, according to Kelly.
Polis expressed his condolences, saying, “My heart goes out to the victims and their families dealing with this senseless act of violence. The entire Evergreen community, along with the whole state of Colorado, is suffering from this tragedy, and I will keep the victims and their loved ones in my thoughts.”
A local Democratic representative expressed shock and anger at the incident, saying, “I’m terrified of the shooting at Evergreen High School, and my heart is shattered for the students, educators, and families involved. I wish a swift recovery for the victims, and my thoughts are with them and their families.”
Senator Lisa Cutter also expressed her heartbreak and frustration over yet another incident of gun violence, adding, “Schools should be safe, and this tragedy serves as a harsh reminder that we must do more to protect our children.”
