2025 Power and Influence: Leaders 20-11 – Alabama’s most influential politicians

The 2025 edition of the Power and Influence Top 50 List has been released by Yellow Hammer News. This annual index serves as a straightforward overview of key figures in Montgomery.

This marks the 13th year of this list, and interest seems to be at an all-time high.

As we gear up for the significant 2026 election cycle, the individuals named here are strategizing to ensure success for their communities and clients as we approach a new era.

In light of discussions with insiders and current trends in politics and public policy, this list recognizes influential government figures committed to advocating for their constituents.

We are set to hold our annual “Service Power of Service” event in Montgomery on Thursday, May 15th, coinciding with the announcement of this year’s final list of honorees.

Welcome to the 2025 class.

20. Anthony Daniels

Alabama House Minority Leader

Anthony Daniels has emerged as a prominent Democrat at the national level in this century.

While many candidates in his party seem to echo campaigns from years past, Anthony’s approach changed the narrative when he entered office in 2014.

He essentially made a statement: “I aim to be the most effective negotiator for our district.” He has succeeded in demonstrating effective leadership in Montgomery, while also championing progressive ideas.

He is undeniably a significant Democrat, despite his Republican peers often trying to dismiss him. The compromises he has forged for his Caucus have had a notably positive impact on Alabama’s legislature since he took office.

It’s not just that Democrats aim to emulate him; many of us wish all lawmakers could follow his example. There’s a lot more to achieve.

19. Danny Garrett

Alabama House Ways & Means Education Committee

Danny Garrett played a key role in a $190 million tax reduction for Alabamians, and he’s had quite a successful year.

His honest and analytical style helps demystify complex budgets and enact necessary reforms.

As chair of the influential ETF committee in the House, he often collaborates with local players in Montgomery.

Many believe that discussions here could impact nearly $10 billion in budget details.

Garrett’s expertise, akin to a CFO managing a publicly traded firm, has been pivotal in shaping initiatives like the Choice Act and Rays Act, which have positively transformed Alabama’s educational landscape.

18. Bobby Singleton

Alabama Senate Minority Leader

Bobby Singleton’s leadership style blends strategy with a bit of theatricality. Some days he surveys the playing field, other days he grapples with tougher hands.

He adeptly positioned himself this session, quickly reestablishing his role at the decision-making table. When the chamber reconvenes next week, it’s clear he hasn’t been sidelined.

This reflects his understanding of the Senate’s intricacies. While Singleton might come across as “little Bobby” from time to time, he’s been a significant presence for over two decades.

Don’t mistake his charisma for mere performance; Singleton has wisdom and skill in equal measure.

Years ago, he successfully challenged Governor Riley’s illegal gambling task force, demonstrating his readiness to slow proceedings when he believes his district isn’t being treated fairly.

17. Steve Marshall

Alabama Attorney General

Alabama politics often reveals clear adversaries—Steve Marshall’s mission has cemented this belief. For him, it’s about addressing what he sees as left-wing extremism infiltrating Alabama’s legal landscape.

It’s not merely about defending ideas; he’s engaged in numerous legal briefs and state litigation, a stance consistent among his Republican counterparts.

Marshall has earned recognition from some of the most influential conservative legal minds, who regard him as a trustworthy defender of their values.

16. Ginger Avery Buckner

Alabama Judicial Association

For over ten years, Ginger Avery Buckner has established herself as a cornerstone in Alabama’s political framework.

Leading the Alabama Justice Association, she combines tactical insight with sharp political sense, serving as a strong advocate for the state’s litigators.

Her work in Congress showcases her adaptability in a shifting political landscape. Known for her precise memory and strategic thinking, she keeps a close watch on every piece of legislation and every unfulfilled promise.

Her colleagues understand the importance of her role, and lawmakers have learned that crossing her can lead to long-lasting consequences.

15. Steve Windom

Windom, Galliher & Associates

Steve Windom’s reputation as a skilled negotiator is well-earned, with his firm being a major player in Montgomery.

His entrepreneurial approach to political business is both meticulous and innovative.

We’ve been highlighting Windom as a key figure since this list began. If you learn anything, it’s that betting against the former lieutenant governor is unwise. This is true for this session, and likely into the 2026 cycle, too.

His political acumen and strategic law-passing skills are evident from his past roles, making him the go-to person for navigating Alabama’s government.

14. Houston Smith

Alabama Power

As Vice President of Government for Alabama Power, Houston Smith has been pivotal in shaping state policies.

Under his guidance, the company has effectively maneuvered challenges, using policy to bolster growth and opportunities throughout Alabama.

Smith is recognized for his thoughtful and principled leadership, committed to fostering trust-based relationships.

His grasp of public policy, coupled with strategic messaging, has made him a critical voice behind various initiatives vital to Alabama.

13. Ted Hosp

Alabama Blue Cross Blue Shield

In recent sessions focused on healthcare, Ted Hosp has skillfully navigated complex regulations that will affect Alabama’s health landscape for years to come.

Those familiar with Montgomery’s power dynamics regard Hosp as a formidable player.

Very few possess his depth of understanding in both the theory and application of legislative processes.

Hosp has managed to mitigate unintended consequences effectively, showcasing his expertise during this session.

He’s a trusted authority on insurance law and has established himself as a leader throughout the Southeast.

12. Steve Raby

Steve Raby understands that strategic advantages are often secured long before any contests begin, yet he’s always ready for a challenge.

Raby is at the heart of speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter’s political strategy. Preferring a low-key profile, he remains one of the most impactful figures in Alabama politics, which is hard to keep under wraps.

A seasoned operator in the legislative arena, Raby’s involvement has been visible throughout this session. He’s also a veteran of campaign politics.

While others are gearing up for the 2026 elections, Raby has been actively engaged since the major elections of 2022.

Expect him to increasingly focus on protecting incumbents and advancing strategic operations designed to expand the Republican base in Alabama.

11. Quentin Riggins

Quentin Riggins stands out as a respected figure in both Alabama’s political and business circles.

As a senior leader at Alabama Power, he tirelessly advocates for the company and local communities, bringing people together to address critical state issues.

His influence stretches beyond corporate boundaries; he’s a trusted member of the Auburn University Board of Trustees and contributes significantly to Alabama’s philanthropic efforts.

Riggins continues to enhance his already impressive influence, building strong connections across various political and governmental arenas that shape Alabama’s future.
