2025 Power and Influence Top 50 List

The 2025 edition of the Power and Influence Top 50 List from Yellow Hammer News is here. This annual index, which is straightforward and comprehensive, highlights individuals who significantly impact Montgomery.

It’s the 13th edition, and if anything, the stakes are higher this time around.

As we gear up for the important 2026 election cycle, those featured on this list are preparing their districts and constituents for what lies ahead.

This list is based on discussions with insiders and the latest in politics and public policy. It recognizes key government figures using their power and influence for the people they serve.

Today, we have our annual “Power of Service” event in Montgomery, coinciding with the final list release.

So, here it is. Welcome to the 2025 class.

10. Liz Fillmore

Governor Kay Ivey’s Office

Power doesn’t always come from being the loudest in the room. Sometimes, it’s about being calm and composed amid chaos. Liz Fillmore has mastered this approach as a senior advisor to Governor Kay Ivey, even before her tenure as Governor.

Her name has become synonymous with the governor’s office, thanks to her disciplined leadership style. She sets high standards for her team while fostering loyalty and trust, which ultimately benefits the state.

Liz has made her mark as one of Alabama’s most impactful chief staffers. She keeps everything running smoothly and supports Governor Ivey, solidifying her place in Alabama’s history as the only female chief of staff. She’s not going anywhere and is likely to climb higher on this list in the future.

9. Bob Geddy

Fine Geddie & Associates

Bob Geddy started his career under the mentorship of a legend, initially working with Senator John Sparkman before becoming an executive assistant to Governor Faubus James. He later directed government relations for Alabama Power.

When he co-founded Fine Geddie in 1984, it wasn’t just a company; it became a significant lobbying institution. Unlike many lobbyists who specialize in a single area, Geddy’s expertise covers a broad spectrum of government, legislative, and political landscapes.

His insights are sought after, especially when contentious issues arise. Lawmakers tend to push any significant bills only after Geddy weighs in. Others may try to emulate his experience and connections, but none have matched his enduring influence.

8. Joe Perkins

Matrix, LLC

Joe Perkins has built his career fighting for the underdogs—those often overlooked and powerless. He’s formidable due to his consistent victories in such battles.

Although some criticize his tactics as questionable, the reality is that fairness isn’t always a part of the equation in these fights.

It seems he’s garnered a bit of a celebrity status lately, and he’s more prominent in conversations than ever. As we near 2026, it looks like Perkins will continue to carve out his unique path.

7. Clay Ryan

Alabama Power

Clay Ryan plays a crucial role in the state’s business and political arenas, serving as a strategic advisor to influential leaders. His expertise in external issues and government relations enables him to significantly impact Alabama’s policy environment.

Ryan’s varied background—as a private sector attorney, senior advisor to the governor, and political strategist—makes him incredibly well-connected. Over the last decade, he has been central to many key political developments in Alabama, earning respect as both a reliable figure and a skillful negotiator.

6. Stephanie Bryan

Creek Indian Pouch Band

Stephanie Bryan has transformed the Porch Band of Creek Indians into a major economic force in Alabama. Since becoming the tribe’s first female chair and CEO in 2014, she has elevated the organization from a historically marginalized group to a key player, extending its influence from Atmore to the Caribbean and competing in the gaming market in the Northeast.

Her journey, shaped by her experience as a single mother in rural Alabama, is a testament to resilience and business acumen. The upcoming Gambling Act could further elevate her influence during the 2026 legislative season.

5. Arthur Orr

Chairman, Alabama Senate Methods and Means Education Committee

Arthur Orr continues to surprise observers with his effectiveness. Not only has he managed this year’s $12.1 billion education budget, but he also championed several significant bills while holding countless meetings with constituents.

While Orr doesn’t always achieve everything he aims for, he gets much of what he wants. As he approaches reelection, his influence in Montgomery is more evident than ever. Whether he might step back at some point is anyone’s guess.

4. Will Ainsworth

Governor of Alabama

Governor Will Ainsworth has shown remarkable discipline and has frequently received accolades on this list, and rightly so. His influence has permeated major legislative developments, and most significant bills from the Alabama Senate carry his signature.

Ainsworth is thoughtful in his approach. It’s as if he has this quiet confidence that makes people take notice. Throughout his time in office, he has accumulated goodwill and relationships that are invaluable. His influence over Alabama’s political landscape is undeniable.

3. Garlan Gudger

Alabama Senate President Pro Tem

Leading the Alabama Senate Pro Tem midway through a challenging time is no small feat, especially for Gudger, who faced personal hardships after a recent boating accident. His ascent in the Caucus reflects his negotiation skills and resilience.

Gudger’s tenacity and willingness to engage with others set him apart. Whether in agreement or opposition, he approaches every issue with an eye toward compromise, but once he’s made up his mind, that’s that.

His high energy in both political and legislative matters positions him as a mainstay on this list for years to come.

2. Nathaniel Ledbetter

Speaker of the Alabama House

Ledbetter has solid reasons to feel optimistic as the Alabama legislative session heads into the 2026 election cycle. He effectively leads a diverse group of Congress members, fighting on their behalf and guiding them through challenges.

His advice and strategic thinking have earned him respect and trust among his peers, which he values immensely. Ledbetter navigated through various issues this year, proving his loyalty and dedication to Alabama’s interests.

1. Kay Ivey

Governor of Alabama

Governor Kay Ivey is entering what will be her final year, reflecting on a remarkable journey that began in Camden. In her last state address, she’ll know voters will choose her successor based on her substantial legislative achievements.

Her dominance in Alabama politics is undeniable, having made significant strides throughout her terms. Ivey’s legacy includes her commitment to stabilizing the state during turbulent times, and she has consistently delivered on her promises.

As I noted previously, she embodies the spirit of various governance aspects for Alabama. This year has solidified her reputation further, making her one of the most popular governors in recent history. Simply put, Kay Ivey represents Alabama, and her impact will be felt long after her tenure ends.
