
The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) has released the results of a week-long crackdown on commercial vehicle drivers.
AZDPS conducted Operation Southern Shield 2023 from Monday 20 February 2023 to Friday 24 February 2023.
Officers focused on commercial vehicles traveling on Interstate 10 from Phoenix to the New Mexico border and Interstate 19 from Tucson to the border. Law enforcement placed particular emphasis on reckless driving, failure to use turn signals or improper signals, failure to abandon right of way, and improper lane changes. Seatbelt use and mobile phone use were also areas of focus.
The AZDPS Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Task Force (CVETF) and partners completed 693 commercial vehicle inspections and recorded 2,238 driver and vehicle inspection reporting violations during Operation Southern Shield.
In addition, 106 vehicles and 135 drivers were disabled.
The purpose of Operation Southern Shield is to “target dangerous driving violations, conduct commercial vehicle (CMV) inspections, and educate drivers on safe and compliant operations to reduce crashes involving commercial vehicles. to do.
AZDPS partnered with the Federal Motor Transportation Security Administration, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, Marana Police Department, Oro Valley Police Department, and Tucson Police Department during Operation Southern Shield.
