The city of Glendale has opened three heat relief centers that are expected to serve up to 90 people a day from now through September, the city reported Thursday.
The goals of these centers are to provide a safe place for unsheltered residents and their pets to rest, receive the nutrition and hydration they need, and to reduce the number of heat-related deaths among unsheltered residents. That’s it.
“This program is an example of a strong partnership between Maricopa County, the City of Glendale, the Arizona Faith Network, and the Phoenix Rescue Mission,” Glendale City Community Services Director Jean Moreno said in a statement. “Each partner contributes resources and expertise to maximize impactful services that support vulnerable members of our communities in ways we simply cannot.”
Earlier this year, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved $771,000 in funding for Glendale to use to combat the heat for homeless people. With this funding, he established three new heat relief respite centers, funded more assistance programs, and enabled transportation to heat relief centres.
The Glendale Center is located at Larkspur Church at 10614 N. 43rd Ave. Glendale Evangelistic and Mission Center (Address: 6242 N. 59th Ave.). and St. John’s Lutheran Church, 7205 N. 51st Ave.
The Glendale Missionary Mission Center is open from noon to 8:00 pm, Monday through Saturday. St. John Lutheran Church is open Monday through Friday from noon to 8 pm. Larkspur Church is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 8pm. Open Wednesdays from noon to 6pm.Friday and Saturday noon to 9pm
