(CNN) A man has died after falling 4,000 feet off the sidewalk of a popular Grand Canyon attraction, according to Arizona officials.
The Mojave County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Department said in a Facebook post that the man, identified only as a 33-year-old man, had been on the Grand Canyon West skywalk before crossing the edge. It is said that he crossed over and plunged into the canyon below.
On June 5th, after receiving a call that someone had crossed the canyon rim, the Technical Rope Rescue Team responded to the Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends 70 feet over the canyon rim.
Two rope experts “traveled to the scene in a Kingman Ranger helicopter and determined the man was dead,” the post said. The sheriff’s office said it was investigating the incident.
The sheriff’s office reported that the man’s remains were later transferred to the Hualapai Nation, a federally recognized Indian tribe in northwest Arizona.
According to the National Park Service, the Skywalk is located outside Grand Canyon National Park in the Grand Canyon West District and is managed by the Hualapai Tribe. The Skywalk has attracted more than 10 million visitors since 2007, according to the Grand Canyon West website.
The Mojave County Sheriff’s Office and the Hualapai State Police did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.
