TOPOCK – The Route 66 Fun Run takes place at Topock on Sunday, promising hundreds of classics at the car show.
The Route 66 Fun Run kicks off in Seligman on Friday, with hundreds of cars traveling the 140-mile stretch of Route 66, with events planned in nearly every community along the way. The march is Topok/Golden Shores and culminates in an award ceremony and auto show that concludes the weekend. The show takes place on May 7th from 11am to 4pm at the Golden Shores Civic Center at 13136 Golden Shores Parkway. The event features raffles, cash bars, barbecues, live entertainment and more.
“The roots of the annual Historic Route 66 Fun Run go back to early 1987, when a small group led by Angel Delgadillo embarked on an ambitious journey to advocate for the revitalization of Route 66, bringing it to Historic, Arizona. We formed the Route 66 Association,” the website reads. “After the association successfully restored Route 66 to Arizona as a historic highway, the group wanted to throw a party.
“The Society’s growing members not only planned a dedication ceremony, but a three-day event. On April 22-24, 1988, the Society hosted the newly preserved Historic Hall between Seligman and Topok. The public was invited to travel along Route 66. The dedication ceremony attracted 152 attendees, with Arizona Governor Rose Mofford cutting the ceremony ribbon and Will Rogers Jr. I participated as a marshal.”
Over the years, Fun Run has become an integral fundraiser to the association’s ongoing mission to maintain, protect and promote the Mother Road.
