NPS and the Coconino County Coroner are cooperating on the death investigation, but have not yet responded to TODAY.com’s request for additional information.

Following the woman’s death, park rangers at Grand Canyon National Park urged visitors to be wary of “excessively hot days” in the coming summer months.

The statement also called on visitors, especially inner canyon hikers and backpackers, to be aware of sections of the trail that could exceed 120°F (49°C). The statement also said hikers should avoid trekking in the inner canyon between 10am and 4pm.

“NPS does not recommend hiking from the rim to the river and back in one day,” the statement said. “Hiking in extreme heat can lead to serious health risks, including heat stroke, heat stroke, hyponatremia (a life-threatening electrolyte imbalance caused by drinking too much water or too little salt), and death. there is potential.”

NPS also noted that rescue requests are fluid during the summer months, which could affect staff availability and employee safety requirements, which could delay efforts to help hikers.
