Key Updates to Note
7. Will Boyd Jr., a Democratic pastor and former state lawmaker, has announced his intention to run for Governor of Alabama in the upcoming 2026 election. His political history includes attempts for the Fifth Congressional District in 2016, Lieutenant Governor in 2018, and a US Senate bid in 2022.
6. The Department of Justice, in an operation launched in 2020, successfully dismantled four dark web child abuse websites that boasted over 120,000 members and millions of files. So far, 18 individuals have been convicted nationwide, including William Spearman from Alabama, who was involved in distributing illegal and exploitative materials targeting children.
5. Texas Republicans are reportedly gearing up to redraw congressional maps in order to secure a house seat and maintain their majority, while California Democrats are also exploring measures to influence their own representation. There’s a notable concern regarding partisan gerrymandering affecting several Congressional seats across the country.
4. The ongoing issue regarding federal funding for education and research remains unresolved, as U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) along with 13 other senators is urging the White House to release health research funds that have been delayed. In addition, Alabama is facing a $68 million shortfall in education funds that were withheld during the Trump administration’s review process.
3. In Alabama, some liberal activists are attracting attention with dubious financial support. For instance, a billboard along the Red Mountain Expressway in Birmingham is questioning the relationship between Jeffrey Epstein and President Trump. Interestingly, there seems to be a lack of solid evidence suggesting Trump was involved in any illegal activities with minors.
2. Following a meeting with Ghislaine Maxwell, the Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche from the Justice Department acquired details surrounding Jeffrey Epstein’s connections. This included a limited grant of immunity for her testimony. U.S. Representative Dale Strong (R-Huntsville) has urged the Trump administration to release additional information about Epstein, potentially to shift media focus from Trump’s accomplishments.
1. President Donald Trump has reached an agreement with the European Union, represented by Ursula von der Leyen, involving $600 billion in EU investments in U.S. energy and defense. This deal also discusses tariffs on EU goods and U.S. automobiles, medicines, and semiconductors. Though U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum currently stand at 50%, there may be room for reduction, with the aim of avoiding trade conflicts and stabilizing relations across the Atlantic.
