Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park Reopens
MONTROSE, CO – The northern section of Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park is set to welcome visitors again after its closure on July 30.
This closure followed a fire ignited by lightning on July 10, which affected the South Rim. This fire was contained at 32%, having scorched about 4,222 acres.
Starting Wednesday, guests can explore various trails and viewpoints along the North Rim.
However, the South Rim, home to the visitor center, remains shut down.
According to Principal Stuart West of Gunnison National Park, the South Rim will reopen only once necessary safety repairs are completed.
The park staff is available for questions and information each day at the Ranger Station from 10 AM to 3 PM. West mentioned the North Rim Campground is relatively small, featuring 13 sites available on a first-come, first-served basis, and noted that vehicles must be under 22 feet in length to camp there.
