As all other U.S. states plan to start daylight saving time in March 2023, Hawaii and much of Arizona will change the clocks on all resident-owned appliances, vehicles, and electronic devices. It will continue to be a haven where you don’t have to.
Even better news: Arizonans won’t have to navigate a one-hour time difference with their West Coast neighbors once daylight saving time kicks in.

Why doesn’t Arizona observe daylight saving time?
The Uniform Time Act of 1966 — allowing states to choose whether to keep standard time or change their clocks twice a year — has been in force in the United States since 1967. Arizona tried to go back to daylight saving time that year, but the state legislature soon decided to opt out and the state went back to standard time from her 1968.
For one thing, Arizonas don’t need the extra hours of sunshine during the summer.
“Arizona joined Daylight Saving Time in 1967, but energy consumption skyrocketed,” says Arizona State University history professor Calvin Schermerhorn. told ASU News in 2018“In most parts of the United States, an extra hour of sunshine was thought to save the fuel used to heat and light buildings. It worked the other way around and I had to let the air conditioner run longer.
The Navajo have elected to continue observing DST. This ensures that everyone on the three-state reservation is in the same time zone.

What happened to permanent daylight saving time?
There have been several attempts in recent years to make daylight saving time permanent at the federal level.
The latest bill, the Sunshine Conservation Act of 2021, was stalled in Congress until the legislative session ended in January. The US Senate passed him unanimously in March 2022, but it has been in the US House of Representatives ever since.
The bill needs to be resubmitted in the 118th Congress and some action taken.
