UAB introduces new graduate certificates centered on healthcare innovation and leadership

This fall, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is launching 10 new graduate certificates and several new bachelor’s degree programs. These offerings span various fields, many available entirely online, making it easier for students to participate from any location.

“At UAB, we’re always adapting to the needs of our students and their aspirations to make a difference,” remarked Dr. Janet Woodruff Boden, Senior Vice President of Academics and Provost. “These new degree programs showcase our students’ dedication to their futures, providing pathways to meaningful careers and deeper learning.”

Some of the newly introduced programs aim to equip students for leadership roles in the healthcare sector.

Health-focused Graduate Certificates (available online)

  • The Graduate Certificate in Artificial Intelligence in Health Services is designed to prepare students to integrate AI tools into patient care, management, and data analytics.
  • The Healthcare Innovation graduate certificate, offered through the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, targets professionals looking to merge medical expertise with business and tech skills.
  • Graduate Certificate in Nurses Leadership in Population Health is tailored for nurses aiming to advance in community health and public health initiatives.
  • Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health Nursing provides training in areas like disaster prevention, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, and emergency management.
  • Graduate Certificate in Dissemination and Implementation Science in Healthcare emphasizes the translation of health research into real-world applications.

Other New Graduate Certificates

  • The non-profit management certificate prepares social work students for leadership roles in various non-profit organizations.
  • Cultural resource management focuses on teaching students how to preserve and promote cultural heritage in archaeology.
  • The Maternal and Child Health Policy and Leadership certificate covers topics in reproductive and perinatal health, health behaviors, and policy development through the Faculty of Public Health.

eSports Program

UAB is also rolling out both undergraduate and graduate certificates in esports performance management and coaching, alongside new Bachelor of Science degrees in the same area. These programs delve into aspects such as managing teams, developing players, and understanding the esports business landscape.

Upcoming: Spring 2026

Looking ahead, the Faculty of Nursing will launch its Graduate Certificate in Addiction Nursing starting in Spring 2026. This online program will prepare nurses to care for patients of all ages impacted by substance use, including those affected before birth or during early childhood.
