Man Accused of Cyberstalking Family of Deceased United Healthcare CEO, Claimed His Children Should Be Killed

Authorities have charged 40-year-old Shane Daly from Galway, New York, with cyberstalking related to his alleged harassment of the family of slain UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Between December 4th and December 7th, Daly reportedly contacted Thompson’s family using a work phone, just hours after the murder. He allegedly left threatening voicemails expressing satisfaction over the CEO’s death and made ominous suggestions about Thompson’s family and children suffering a similar fate, as mentioned in court documents.

Acting U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III stated, “Brian Thompson was shot in midtown Manhattan. Daly seemed to take pleasure in the tragedy. He did all he could to amplify the pain inflicted on the Thompson family, and my office, along with our partners, will work to hold him accountable for this malicious and outrageous act.”

Daly could face up to five years in prison and fines of $250,000 if found guilty, according to the press release. There’s also the possibility of supervised release for up to three years.

The FBI is continuing its investigation. Christopher G. Rye, Assistant Director of the FBI’s New York Office, commented that the calls and messages made in the days following Thompson’s murder were “ruthless and calm harassment.”

Luigi Mangione is said to have shot Thompson in Manhattan on December 4th. Surveillance footage reportedly shows a masked individual firing at the CEO when he arrived at the UnitedHealth Group Investor Conference. Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania five days later.
