Trump’s Initiative to Combat Crime in Washington D.C.
President Donald Trump is on a mission—aiming to address the persistent crime issues in Washington, D.C. This push is garnering significant backing from Alabama Republican lawmakers, who are frankly fed up with what they perceive as ineffective leadership in their areas.
In 2024, Washington, D.C. recorded troubling statistics, particularly in robbery and murder rates, placing it among the most dangerous major cities in the country. Senator Katie Britt, who leads the Land Budget Subcommittee, has emphasized that restoring safety in the capital is a “national priority.”
On social media, Britt applauded the president’s efforts and mentioned her collaboration with Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina to advance a DC Security Fund through Congress.
Graham echoed her sentiments, stating that all Americans should support the initiative to revitalize the capital.
I had an excellent discussion with the President and senior staff regarding how Congress can assist in making Washington, D.C. safe again. The White House is preparing a package for me, and together we hope to achieve this goal.
– Lindsey Graham
For Britt, the urgency of improving safety in D.C. is personal. In October 2023, one of her staff members was confronted with a firearm. The day following that incident, she called attention to the escalating crime crisis.
“Just look at the police department’s statistics. This year, we’ve seen a 68% increase in robberies and a staggering 102% rise in car thefts,” she remarked. “Local leaders in D.C. must take responsibility for managing this criminal crisis—it impacts not just residents but the very integrity of our nation’s capital.”
She has also introduced legislation aimed at preventing illegal immigrants and non-citizens from voting in D.C. elections. This bill seeks to overturn a 2022 law passed by the D.C. City Council that allowed non-citizens to cast ballots. Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville has endorsed this legislation.
D.C. currently faces a higher rate of violent crime, murder, and robbery than any of the 50 states, with a murder rate of 27.54 per 100,000 residents in 2024. Moreover, it has the highest rate of vehicle theft in the country, recorded at 842.4 thefts per 100,000 residents, compared to the national average of 250.2 thefts per 100,000.
