Alabama facility plans significant expansion with GE’s announcement of a $3 billion investment in the U.S.

GE Appliances has made a significant announcement regarding a historic $3 billion investment aimed at enhancing its manufacturing capacities within the United States. This initiative focuses on bolstering domestic operations over the next five years, with a particular emphasis on the Decatur, Alabama facility, which is recognized as a leading manufacturer of top-freezer refrigerators.

Kevin Nolan, the President and CEO of GE Appliances, emphasized the company’s forward-thinking approach to manufacturing, stating that their commitment to U.S. manufacturing is unparalleled over the past decade in the appliance sector. He expressed confidence that this extensive investment plan reflects ongoing dedication to U.S. production.

Bill Good, the Vice President of Supply Chain, elaborated on the significance of the company’s robust financial commitment. He pointed out that while infrastructure is essential, the backbone of the American manufacturing revival lies with its people. This highlights GE Appliances’ partnerships with educational institutions aimed at cultivating the next generation of manufacturers, thereby reinstilling purpose and pride in the industry.

The Decatur facility is gearing up to introduce a new model to better meet consumer demand, with expectations for significant production increases by late August 2025.

Key economic contributions from the Decatur plant include:

  • Contributing approximately $2.1 billion to Alabama’s GDP annually
  • Investing $114 million each year with Alabama suppliers
  • Generating $95 million in state and local taxes
  • Allocating $9 million for new thermoforming technology
  • Establishing a new onsite primary care clinic for employees and their families in 2025
  • Collaboration with the Alabama Fame Program, employing nine graduates and currently involving eight students

Previously, GE Appliances undertook a $125 million expansion at its North Alabama plant back in 2020, a move that not only raised total employment levels but also created additional jobs and enhanced plant capacity significantly.

The initial phase of this latest investment will cover facilities in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and South Carolina. When all is said and done, GE Appliances will have invested an impressive total of $6.5 billion in U.S. manufacturing and distribution networks since 2016.
