Schiff Establishes Legal Defense Fund Amid Mortgage Fraud Investigation
California Senator Adam Schiff, a Democrat, has set up a new legal defense fund as the Department of Justice looks into his finances due to alleged mortgage fraud. Schiff, known for his long-standing rivalry with former President Donald Trump, may be facing a drawn-out legal confrontation as the Justice Department examines his real estate dealings involving properties in Maryland and California while he was a member of the House of Representatives.
The Senator Schiff Legal Defense Fund was created by California Democrats recently, according to the Internal Revenue Service. This comes amidst the backdrop of serious allegations surrounding Schiff’s claims about his primary residences to secure more favorable loan conditions.
Special prosecutor Ed Martin was appointed by Attorney General Pam Bondi on August 8 to probe allegations of mortgage fraud against Schiff. Reports indicate that he misrepresented his Maryland home as his primary residence, even while simultaneously claiming a condo in Burbank, California, as his primary home.
Schiff’s attorney, Preet Bharara, described the allegations as “transparently false” and “shaking for a long time.” Bharara, a known critic of Trump, was dismissed from his position as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York in 2017.
A judge in Maryland is currently evaluating whether to approve criminal charges against allegations that Schiff and other California Democrats forged property records to secure better loan terms on the Maryland property.
Trump has consistently called for charges against Schiff tied to these real estate transactions, labeling him a “con man.” The former president has frequently criticized Schiff’s involvement in the Russian investigation, suggesting that consequences may soon follow for California Democrats.
“I’m looking at Pam,” Trump stated recently. “These people put our country in great danger. And Adam Schiff, it was all made up. That was a hoax.”
Schiff has played prominent roles in key investigations, including leading the House Democrats during the impeachment proceedings against Trump in 2020 and participating in the inquiry into the January 6th riots.
In response, Schiff’s spokesperson, Marisol Samayoa, said, “It is clear that Donald Trump and his allies will continue to weaponize the judicial process to attack Senator Schiff for holding this corrupt administration accountable. This fund ensures that he can fight these unfounded smears while continuing his work.”
