Hazardous spill closes I-10 Near Kolb in Tucson

Interstate 10 in Tucson remains closed after yesterday’s accident involving hazardous materials. The Arizona Department of Public Safety has released few details about the crash of a commercial truck carrying hazardous materials. The accident occurred on February 14, 2023 at approximately 2:43 PM.

The AZDPS Hazardous Materials Response Unit and partner agencies such as the Tucson Fire Department, Tucson Police Department, Pima County Sheriff’s Department, and Marana Police Department are working together to mitigate the incident. First responders were evacuated from around the area where the incident occurred. AZDPS has confirmed that the driver of the vehicle has died.

Residents within half a mile of the crash on Interstate 10 southeast of downtown Tucson were evacuated, and residents within a mile were exposed to liquid nitric acid leaking from a truck tractor pulling the Arizona box trailer. was found to be in the area, and was ordered to evacuate on the spot. the public security department said.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted Tuesday night, but officials reinstated the order Wednesday morning, saying the gassing occurred as the crew tried to remove the cargo. Residents of the area were told to turn off heaters and air conditioning systems that bring in outside air.

Interstate 10 remains closed in both directions between Rita Road and Kolb Road in Tucson. The general public should avoid the area and motorists should seek alternative routes. Troopers anticipate a massive shutdown.
