Tortugas’ homemade pizza has been highlighted by Food Network as the best in Alabama, featuring it in their “50 State Pizza Slice” showcase.

The restaurant is particularly known for its Chicago-style stuffed pizza, a signature dish that has defined Tortugas since its inception in 1999.

The founders, Carlos and Carol Viscaino, moved from Chicago to Birmingham with the intent of bringing the city’s iconic deep dish style to the South. Their pizzeria has become a go-to for those craving authentic, hearty pizza. Now, their son Matt is carrying on the family tradition and is expanding the business to Birmingham’s South Side, in addition to their original Hoover location.

As noted by Food Network, both locations serve thin crust options, but the standout is clearly the filling variety, especially the popular Carne Special. This pie is loaded with Italian sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, and bacon—definitely not for the faint of heart.

The praise from Food Network adds to an impressive list of accolades. Tortugas has been recognized as Birmingham’s Top Pizza by the Birmingham Business Journal, has won the Best Pizza title eight times according to Hoover Sun, and has also been featured in Birmingham Magazine as part of the best pizza roundup. Additionally, it’s listed among the top 100 dishes to try in Alabama and is celebrated as one of the top 10 restaurants in the state by the Top Rated Local Restaurant Awards.

Beyond its signature stuffed pies, the menu boasts a variety of Chicago-inspired options. Guests can enjoy thin crust slices alongside hearty stuffed pizzas, all filled with layers of cheese, meats, and vegetables. While the Carne Special is a fan favorite, Tortugas also offers traditional combinations that reflect its deep culinary roots.
