Flagstaff Requests Feedback for Spruce Wash Wedge Art Project

Community Input Sought for Flagstaff Art Project

The City of Flagstaff is reaching out to residents for their thoughts on a new 3D Landmark Art feature at Promontory, located on East Cedar Avenue and Northwest Street. This initiative is part of the Spruce Wash Wedge Detention Project.

“If you live in the East Side or have strong connections to this area, our artist team wants to hear from you,” said Jana Weldon, who manages the Beautification, Arts, and Science program. “This is a chance to share what makes this part of Flagstaff special.”

Currently, an online survey is open until September 9th, inviting participants to provide their views through a mix of experiential and imaginative questions aimed at fostering genuine insights. The information gathered will assist the artists in creating unique, site-specific artwork that embodies the essence of the East Side.

“Community input is an important part of the public art process,” Weldon noted. “From choosing artist teams to developing concepts and final designs, the community’s voice guides you through every step of the way. This ensures that the artwork is impactful, lasting, and truly created by the community for the community.”

The artist team will assess all feedback and identify themes, stories, and cultural elements to inspire future designs. This local input, combined with artistic insights, will shape the initial concept in the upcoming months. Another chance for community feedback will come during the next review period in 2026.

This artwork is part of the Spruce Wash Watershed Improved Flood Mitigation Project and aims to honor the newly constructed areas, which include retaining walls and expanded sidewalks.

Last spring, the artist team Haddad|Dragan was selected for this project by a committee that included community members and local organizations. Their recent works include installations like “Lion Eyes” and “South Side Groves” at the Downtown Connection Center.
