Meaher State Park Celebrates Upgrades
On Friday, local officials gathered to commemorate significant enhancements at Meaher State Park. The park has expanded its campsite, added four new small cabins, and built new park offices, among other improvements.
The local government collaborated with state park staff for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to officially introduce these new facilities.
“We’re transparent about our aim: providing a fantastic experience for everyone visiting the state park, particularly in terms of overnight stays,” stated Chris Blankenship, commissioner for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. “We believe these upgrades at Meaher State Park will help us reach that objective. More campground space and charming cabins mean that larger groups can come and appreciate what the park offers.”
The campsite now features 45 luxurious RV sites, all equipped with complete electricity, water, and sewer connections, along with a new bathhouse that includes 11 family-style toilets.
In addition, the park has introduced four new small cabins. A newly constructed park headquarters offers stunning water views, alongside staff offices and interpretation centers. Drivers using US 90/98, also referred to as the Battleship Parkway or Causeway, will notice new entrances and boundary fences surrounding the park.
Meaher State Park draws thousands of visitors annually, serving as a gateway to the Mobile Tenso Delta and the Metro Mobile area. Its strategic location near Gulf Coast beaches, Interstate 10, and the East Coast renders it a favored destination for locals and RV enthusiasts alike.
“The upgrades at Meaher State Park are impressive,” remarked Sen. Chris Elliott. “From fishing and birdwatching to kayaking and simply unwinding in nature, the array of activities here attracts a lot of visitors. It’s wonderful to see these enhancements and understand that they enable more people to enjoy this beautiful park.”
Online reservations for campsites are available through the Alabama State Parks Adventure Online portal, where guests are encouraged to plan ahead to secure their preferred dates.
These upgrades were financed via the Restoration Act, while enhancements to the campsite store were partly funded by an $80 million bond issue that voters approved in 2022 to benefit state parks, along with $1.1 million from the state’s Gomesa grant program sourced from offshore oil and gas leases.
In recent announcements, five new cottages and upgrades to campsites at Wind Creek State Park in Alexander City have also been celebrated, alongside new playgrounds at Chihuakura State Park in Auburn, all thanks to bond funds.
Several important projects are currently in progress across other state parks, expected to wrap up by 2026. These include a new lodge at Cheaha State Park, renovations at Lake Lurleen State Park, and an expansion at Gulf Coast Park, which was recently recognized as one of the top RV parks in the country.
“This is an exciting time for state parks with numerous commendable projects underway or nearing completion,” commented Matthew Cups, director of state parks. “The improvements at Meaher State Park should invigorate the park, making it better than ever.”
