Poll Reveals Support for Trump’s Crime Initiatives
A recent survey indicates that many Americans back President Donald Trump’s approach to tackling crime in Washington, D.C., while also expressing concerns about the safety of major cities.
The Harvard Cap/Harris poll revealed that 54% of registered voters view the president’s crime-fighting measures in the capital as “justified and necessary.” This positive response arrives as the administration highlights a notable decrease in criminal activity since the president’s federal intervention in D.C., including a stretch of 12 consecutive days without a murder.
“For the past 20-30 years, D.C. has seen an average of one murder a day. So, in two weeks, the president and his team potentially saved six or seven lives,” a source pointed out, referring to lives saved during this safer period.
Another comment emphasized that individuals are alive and with their families today, thanks to the president’s determination not to let the city fall into chaos wrought by crime and disorder.
Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney Johnny Piro for the District of Columbia attributed part of the crime reduction to the president’s hardline stance. “The changes stemming from the president’s actions to beautify and secure D.C. are genuinely altering the safety dynamics in the area,” he remarked on a social media platform.
The poll also indicated that 54% of those surveyed support the president’s declaration of a crime state of emergency in D.C., with 56% believing that most urban areas in the U.S. feel unsafe. Additionally, 51% of registered voters think that deploying National Guard units in Washington could improve safety.
The administration’s crime reduction efforts reportedly enjoy significant backing from independents; around 47% of them support Trump’s initiatives to lower crime rates.
Results also showed a dramatic decline in specific criminal activities, with robberies dropping by 42% and carjackings plummeting by 85% within the previous two weeks, according to the D.C. Police Union.
In a related incident, a member of the Venezuela Tren de Aragua gang was arrested in Washington, highlighting ongoing law enforcement actions. The gang was reportedly under surveillance prior to this arrest, which involved encounters with several immigrants.
In contrast, a Democratic National Committee presentation claimed that the Republicans bear the political responsibility for crime-related issues.
As he’s done in D.C., Trump is now setting his sights on Chicago, intending to deploy federal resources there while seeking emergency powers to combat local crime.
An online poll of 2,025 registered voters was conducted from August 20 to August 21.
