James Spann: Light rain expected in parts of Alabama later today or tonight

Weather Update for Alabama

This morning in Alabama, temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 58 to 65 degrees. It feels pretty nice for the end of August. Expect an increase in cloud cover as the day progresses, and there’s a chance of light rain this afternoon and into the evening. Humidity is low, so some areas might remain dry. Most places will see highs in the lower 80s today.

Weekend Forecast

A weather front is slowly moving into South Alabama. This could bring some showers, particularly in the southern parts of the state, especially below US 84. For northern and central Alabama, the likelihood of rain seems quite low for now, with highs expected to be in the mid-80s.

Forecast confidence for next week isn’t particularly strong, but it looks like only a few isolated showers are likely on Monday and Tuesday. By week’s end, a flow of dry air could reach the deep south. More details are available in video briefings.

Tropical Update

In the North Atlantic, Tropical Storm Fernando has dissipated, leaving the rest of the basin fairly quiet. Currently, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring one area of interest. Tropical waves are expected to emerge from the west coast of Africa near the Cabo Verde Islands this weekend, and conditions seem favorable for slow development of this system as it moves westward at about 15 to 20 mph. However, the development chance remains only at 20%.

Soccer Weather

Tonight, UAB is playing Alabama at the Protective Stadium in Downtown Birmingham with a kickoff at 7:30 PM CT. There’s a small chance of light rain, but overall, it should be mostly cloudy. Expect temperatures to drop from around 78 degrees to the low 70s by the fourth quarter.

Auburn will be up against Baylor tomorrow night in Waco, Texas, kicking off at 7:00 PM CT. Temperatures will decrease from near 89 degrees at the start, finally settling in the 80s.

On Saturday, Alabama will face Florida in Tallahassee with a 2:30 PM CT kickoff. The sky may be partly cloudy, and some passing showers and storms could occur during the game, with temperatures reaching the mid-80s.
