Newsom Clearly Acknowledges That Democrats Have Turned Into The Weak Party

Newsom Discusses Democratic Party Challenges

California Governor Gavin Newsom acknowledged on Wednesday that his party is grappling with “debilitating” issues. During an event in Sacramento, he shared insights with Politico, stating, “The essence of the party’s challenge is weakness.” His comments arrive amid speculation about his potential presidential run in 2028.

Reflecting on past struggles, Newsom mentioned how former President Bill Clinton characterized the party’s difficulties following a defeat in 2002. Clinton suggested that “uncertain” voters often opt for a “strong and wrong” leader over a “weak” one. Newsom emphasized the need for the party to recognize this reality, insisting, “Our party needs to wake up to that.”

He further asserted that Democrats must enhance their credibility with Americans, saying, “We must use all our tools at our disposal to not only assert ourselves, but to prove ourselves to Americans.”

These statements come as polling indicates a significant drop in Democratic popularity, reaching historic lows in 2025. After the GOP’s success in the 2024 elections, some party members are advocating for a shift back to more centrist policies.

Democrats have lost considerable voter support between 2020 and 2024, while Republicans have gained traction in that timeframe. Another potential presidential contender, former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, recently described the party’s current image as “weak,” “awakening,” and “toxic.”

Initial polls show Newsom leading fellow Californian, former Vice President Kamala Harris, in the race for the 2028 presidency. A recent Berkeley/Los Angeles Times poll revealed that around 45% of registered California voters expressed enthusiasm for Newsom’s potential candidacy, while 36% felt similarly about Harris.
