Incident at Minneapolis Catholic School
A 12-year-old girl involved in the recent shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school was critically injured, while her mother was working in an intensive care unit, unaware that her daughter’s school was impacted by the tragic event. This information came to light through various fundraising efforts.
Sofia Fortus’ mother was at Hennepin Healthcare during the incident on Wednesday. She serves as a pediatric emergency nurse. Fundraising pages, including GoFundMe, revealed these details, supported by confirmation from People magazine.
One of the young victims from the shooting is currently in peril at the very hospital where her mother works, as reported by CBS News.
According to the GoFundMe page, Sofia was shot and sustained significant injuries. A Greek Orthodox monk from St. Mary also noted the seriousness of her condition during updates shared on Facebook.
After undergoing surgery, Sofia remained in the ICU. Her brother Anthony, who was at school during the shooting, thankfully escaped unharmed. The campaign for the family has raised over $300,000 so far.
Police were called to the scene of the shooting at Minneapolis Announcement Church and Catholic Schools just before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, as reported by FOX9. The shooter was armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol, reportedly using all three during the attack, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. In total, 20 individuals were injured, including two fatalities — an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old.
The authorities noted that among the injured were fifteen children aged between 6 and 15, alongside three adults in their ’80s.
The assailant has been identified as Robin Westman, a transgender man formerly known as Robert Westman. The New York Post reported that Westman had posted a video before the shooting, which included messages like “kill Donald Trump” alongside phrases about attacking children. Chief O’Hara revealed that Westman had a handwritten manifesto that was also captured in recorded footage.
In a translation of his manifesto, Westman expressed dissatisfaction with being transgender and mentioned wanting to avoid “brainwashing.” He legally changed his name to Robin in 2019, and it was noted that his mother previously worked at the school.
