More games and less practice is now the norm for Yuma High School’s boys’ basketball team.
“The big part is keeping the energy high,” said coach Dave Sheffield. “It’s like playing a game and practicing and adjusting as you learn.”
Thanks to multiple rescheduled games, Yuma is in the process of closing out the season with nine games in three weeks. The former Indians said last Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday he played 2-1, and this Tuesday, Thursday and Friday he will play next Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to wrap up the regular season next week. This week saw Class 3A’s home game against Strasburg on Tuesday, and Lower Platt games in Sedgwick County and Merino today and Friday. Yuma will be at Caliche on Tuesday and will host 3A Peyton next Wednesday.
“It’s important to get the team scouting going as quickly as possible and get the workforce planning done in no time,” says Sheffield.
Yuma is 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the lower plats this week and will be looking for another league title before moving up to 3A heading into the postseason. The team improved to 11-3 overall on Tuesday night with a 64-29 win over Strasburg.

The former tribe pulled off a challenging 56-45 league win at Wiggins last Friday night.
Yuma was in control for most of the game, but was still a little hairy towards the end, probably because it was her third game in four days.
Yuma trailed by nine points in the first quarter, and a variety of players scored in the second quarter to push their lead into double digits. Yuma led 32-16 at halftime.
The local boys maintained their margin through the third round to lead 48-30.
