As Alabamians gear up for Labor Day weekend and the start of college football season, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is reminding everyone about safety on the roads and waterways.
Troopers from the Highway Patrol and Marine Patrol will be out in full force, setting up checkpoints and conducting waterway patrols to deter risky behavior and promote a safe holiday for everyone.
“Labor Day weekend has always been one of the busiest times for both our roads and waterways, especially with the excitement that comes with the football season kicking off,” stated Area Secretary Hal Taylor. “We want everyone to enter the season with a win by making smart choices.”
Road Safety Tips
Celebrate Wisely: Have a plan for a safe ride if you’re drinking.
Always Buckle Up: Seat belts can be life-saving, even for short trips.
Stay Off Your Phone: Texting while driving is like navigating with your eyes closed, which is pretty dangerous.
No Tailgating: Keep the fun of tailgating in the stadium, not on the road.
Waterway Safety Tips
Know the Guidelines: Adhere to the regulations and stay in no-wake zones.
Wear Life Jackets: They are still the best defense against unexpected dangers.
No Mixing Alcohol with Boating: It’s a recipe for disaster.
Stay Vigilant: Be aware of swimmers, paddleboarders, and sudden summer storms.
To enhance safety along the coast, ALEA will collaborate with the Gulf Coast and Orange Beach Fire Departments to deploy helicopters for monitoring and quick response to emergencies involving swimmers.
This operation ensures coverage for areas outside the usual lifeguard patrols, allowing for rapid assistance.
“Our goal is to keep everyone safe, whether you’re tailgating, boating, or enjoying the beach,” said Col. Jonathan Archer, Director of Public Safety. “We encourage you to have a safe weekend by making wise choices and following the rules, so your holiday can end on a positive note rather than a tragic one.”
ALEA also invites Alabamians to follow them on social media for real-time traffic updates and additional safety information throughout the weekend.
