Nogales Declares Suicide Prevention Month
In a significant meeting on September 3, 2025, the city of Nogales, Arizona, announced September as both Suicide Prevention Month and Suicide Prevention Day. This initiative was spearheaded by Michel Ramirez, the chairman of the Disability Committee (CODI), with the aim of raising awareness about the critical issue of suicide that impacts countless individuals and families every year.
Ramirez shared some alarming statistics from the World Health Organization, noting that over 700,000 people worldwide take their own lives annually, while the United States recorded more than 49,000 suicide deaths in 2022. The discussions emphasized the urgent need to focus on mental health, particularly for vulnerable groups like people with disabilities and veterans, who often experience higher rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
During the meeting, Jessica Gallego from the Wheel of Peace read a declaration emphasizing the importance of community support and fostering open conversations around mental health issues. She acknowledged that every life lost to suicide impacts families, workplaces, and communities, underscoring the necessity for accessible resources and crisis services.
The city’s commitment includes promoting a safe environment and encouraging discussions about mental health, which aims to reduce stigma and build resilience. The declaration calls on residents to come together in fostering hope and healing, reminding them that help is always available, and that suicide is preventable.
As Nogales recognizes Suicide Prevention Month, residents are encouraged to engage in caring conversations and support one another—reinforcing the message that they are not alone in their struggles. This initiative not only honors those lost to suicide but also empowers individuals to seek help and build supportive communities.
