back and forth. Shot after shot. Bucket to bucket. Rising emotions, a long week of grief temporarily gave way to a basketball game that went along with the rivalry’s history.
Somehow, the key turning point in a great basketball game was the Ann Arbor Airball.
The match is a draw with just over 2 minutes remaining. michigan basketball Joey Baker has a 3-point shot from the right.missed everything except Michigan State Basketball Joey Hauser turns his back and rolls out of bounds.
On the inbounds, Kobe Buffkin dribbled around Spartan Tyson Walker and nearly lost the ball, sending a three-pointer into the net. I was.
Game, Wolverine.
in the meantime UM won 84-72 Thanks to those 3-pointers and a 12-0 run on free throws, the Wolverines’ dominance on the offensive board made a big difference.

Even if it proved to be a complete fluke credited to the team rather than the individual players that helped the most.
Michigan dominated the board 38-25 and had a 14-6 advantage on the offensive grass — 10 in the second half led to 11 crucial second-chance points, and the final point was Buffkin’s 3 to give the Wolverines a permanent win. gave a lead. Dickinson and Tallis Reid Jr. each made big plays in the end as he had three offensive rebounds in the second half.
Doug McDaniel’s 18 points led the five Wolverines by double digits. Buffkin had 17 points and five rebounds, while Dickinson had 13 points and seven boards. The lead led him to 10 boards and he finished with 8 points. He finished 49.2% overall for the Wolverines.
Hauser’s 20 points led the Spartans, and Malik Hall added 14 in what was probably his best game since returning from injury. Tyson Walker scored 11 as MSU made 47.5% of his shots.
After settling in after an emotional pre-game ceremony in which UM paid tribute to the victims of Monday’s shooting on MSU’s campus, the two teams were in step with each other for much of the first half.
After Hauser started the game with a foul line jumper, McDaniel scored seven consecutive points, much to the applause of the crowd. Hauser then caught fire, hitting two of his 3-pointers and driving his layup, during which he scored 10 points. His second deep bucket of his gave the Spartans a 6-point lead midway through the half.
Hall then began scoring and perhaps looking as good as he did since returning from a recurrence of a stress reaction in his left foot that kept him out of three games in January. The senior hit a jumper and a 3-pointer, and Walker made a driving layup around Dickinson to put MSU ahead 33–25 with four minutes left until halftime.
However, the Spartans struggled to close out halftime, and with 1:31 before halftime, UM pulled back within two on Dickinson’s 3-point play. Hall answered with a critical 3-pointer and MSU carried his 36-33 lead into halftime.
Both teams shot Wright across the board. MSU he scored 53.3%. Michigan is crisp he scored 48.1%. Still, neither team fared well from the outside, with the Spartans going 11-4 (36.4%) and the Wolverines 14-4 (28.6%) in the fourth half.
In the second half, the MSU veterans continued their revived offense. Hauser was fouled and made three free throws during the break, and Hoggard split the double team for a layup. Freshman Jackson Kohler’s layup pushed the Spartans’ lead back to his five.
However, MSU struggled to keep Michigan off the offensive grass, with Jett Howard chipping onto the Wolverines’ sixth offensive board with one possession and being fouled by Hall on a three-point play.
Howard then dribbled to center and hit a free-throw line jumper to tie the game at 46 – 14:10 all. However, the Michigan guard twisted his right ankle on landing and had to be helped by his bench. he didn’t come back
I went back and forth from there, making hay after hay. MSU kept the lead or left it tied, and Hoggard’s driving layup and Hauser’s third 3-pointer put it back to a 6-point lead, making it 63-57 with 8:23 left and UM coach Juwan Howard prompted to call timeout.
After Baker’s 3-pointer timed out, the Wolverines continued to attack the offensive grass and quickly undid it to regain their initial lead as they were 18-17 with just over 11 1/2 minutes left in the first half. A Reed putback by a Hauser foul on a three-point play tied the score again with 6:59 remaining before Reed fell on a Buffkin error and Dickinson followed with a pair of free throws to put Michigan to 67 with 5:20 left. -65. play.
The Wolverines had 13 offensive rebounds at that point, but Hauser tied with MSU’s fourth offensive board. And after Dickinson laid up a spin move around the hole, Hauser tied it at the line again.
Reed drew Sissoko’s fifth foul on a layup and banked a free throw to give UM another 3-point lead, but Walker answered with 3 points at 2:28 to tie the tie again.
That’s when fate and one false bounce from Hauser dashed MSU’s hopes of wiping out their rivals and returning home with joy to East Lansing.
Instead, the Spartans had to settle for the wrong ending of an epic game.
