Gingrich Cautions GOP on Overlooking Simple Victories in State Elections

Gingrich’s Warning to Republicans on Upcoming Gubernatorial Races

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich issued a caution to Republicans during a Monday appearance on Fox Business, suggesting that Democrats may squander straightforward political opportunities in this year’s gubernatorial elections by failing to address their records on taxes and spending.

Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Miki Sherrill are in the running for governor in Virginia and New Jersey, respectively. On “Kudlow,” Gingrich pointed out that Republicans have not effectively capitalized on critical political critiques, noting that both candidates have supported tax measures that are largely unpopular among state voters.

“Every Democrat who voted for these measures essentially endorsed the biggest tax hike in American history, but it’s crucial for Republicans to convey this message clearly,” Gingrich remarked during his discussion with host Larry Kudlow.

He lamented the lack of impactful advertising from Republicans, emphasizing that both candidates are backing tax increases that a significant majority of residents in their states oppose.

“We’ve got two Democrats from Congress running for governor in New Jersey and Virginia, yet they fail to highlight that these candidates allow for substantial tax hikes, which 84% of the populace in those states disapproves of,” he added.

Gingrich also mentioned that reforms concerning Medicaid present Republicans with more political leverage. He stated, “We need to reform Medicaid by stopping fraud and insisting that able-bodied adults work. From our studies on voter priorities, these issues resonate with 75 to 80% of the public,” he noted. “Republicans must learn to communicate these points effectively and reiterate them.”

In a related note, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) echoed similar sentiments in August, releasing an internal memo emphasizing that a particular legislative measure offers Republicans a significant advantage in the upcoming 2026 elections. The memo urged lawmakers to showcase the law’s benefits and criticize Democrats for opposing tax credit provisions aimed at curbing Republican expenditures.
