North Alabama Singing River Trail: More Than Just a Greenway
The Singing River Trail isn’t merely a network of greenways—it’s a broader vision aimed at creating a connected and flourishing region. Once it’s fully realized, this trail will stretch over 200 miles, enhancing local connections and opening new avenues for health, education, economic growth, tourism, and entrepreneurship in Northern Alabama.
Significant progress has emerged in three key areas over the last eight months, encompassing local entrepreneurship through launch tanks, the activation of new trail segments, and the initiation of the first 220 Founders Club campaign.
These achievements reflect a dedication to community, economic development, and environmental stewardship.
Launch Tank: Fostering Innovation
Earlier this year, the Singing River Trail hosted its most competitive launch tank yet at the Scottsboro Civic Center, where nine entrepreneurs from North Alabama vied for a share of $27,000 in non-diluted funding aimed at bolstering their businesses.
The $10,000 prize went to the Madison County Shampoo & Sleep Spa. “This year’s competition was truly exceptional,” shared Misty Potter, the executive director of Singing River Trail. “The level of innovation underscores North Alabama’s emergence as a hub for entrepreneurship. We’re thrilled for all the finalists and can’t wait to see what the winners accomplish next.”
Potter emphasized the vital role of small businesses—they’re really the backbone of our economy, and we need to ensure they’re integrated within our community.
50 Mile Trail for Future Generations
By the close of 2025, more than 50 miles of trails are expected to be fully operational, thanks to the relentless efforts of the eight counties involved. These trails will provide diverse experiences, from scenic river paths and natural wooded trails to paved greenways ideal for biking and leisurely strolls, making exploration easier and more enjoyable for both residents and visitors.
“On the Singing River Trail, regionalism is not just a trend—it’s a verb,” Potter declared. “This active connection among North Alabama communities via outdoor spaces fosters economic development, provides alternative transportation routes, and creates recreational opportunities.” Such a cooperative approach enables the counties to benefit while strengthening the entire region.
“Our work is deeply intertwined with the eight counties we serve. The impact once we complete this initiative will be invaluable,” Potter noted. “What we’re building today isn’t just for us; it’s for future generations. We’re committed to providing safe, green trails that will help bolster our economy for years to come.”
Leaving a Lasting Legacy: 220 Founders Club
To maintain this momentum, Singing River Trail launched its inaugural fundraising campaign, the 220 Founders Club. This initiative, named after the over 220 miles of interconnected trails planned, invites community members to join as founders and support the trail’s planning, development, and activation.
“Our annual campaign represents the extensive network of trails we are working to connect,” Potter elaborated. “We want people to become founders and help our initiatives thrive. Your contributions directly support the planning, development, and revitalization of trails in Northern Alabama. Importantly, this effort ensures our work continues far into the future.”
How to Get Involved
The Singing River Trail is much more than a set of greenways; it symbolizes a bold aspiration for a healthier, more connected North Alabama. Through innovation, community involvement, and responsible stewardship, it is establishing a legacy that will enrich lives and the economy for generations.
“This represents a chance to invest in something enduring. It connects neighbors, fosters healthier communities, and leaves a legacy of outdoor opportunities,” Potter urges.
