The Auburn Corner: Freeze isn’t coaching for his job this week, but the situation is becoming more urgent

Auburn Tigers Prepare for Critical Game Against Georgia

This weekend, the Auburn Tigers face a pivotal matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs at Jordan-Hare Stadium, which presents a valuable chance to shine at home under the lights.

Following a bye week, there seems to have been a reset for the program, especially after head coach Hugh Freeze took significant blame for two tough road losses against Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

While some might argue about questionable officiating during the Oklahoma game, the defeat against Texas A&M largely stemmed from issues with coaching decisions and poor offensive performance. It’s puzzling, really, considering Freeze is expected to be an offensive expert.

Yet, despite his ability to recruit talent, the results on the field haven’t matched expectations. Even though it’s early in the season, things don’t appear to have changed much, even with what some say is the most talented roster Auburn has had.

If Freeze can lead the Tigers to a win against Georgia—something they haven’t accomplished since 2017—it could dramatically alter the narrative surrounding his job security. But given the current struggles of both teams, this game feels increasingly crucial for Auburn.

While a loss might not immediately cost Freeze his job, the offense has continued to disappoint. If they suffer three consecutive losses, it’ll definitely raise more eyebrows and discussions.

And why wouldn’t it?

Freeze’s track record against SEC teams has been dismal, particularly when facing ranked opponents. Even after three years, the Tigers are still on the hunt for that signature victory under Freeze and his staff.

It’s not quite a win-or-else situation yet, but the pressure is certainly mounting.

A victory on Saturday could quiet the critics, but only time will tell if that’s achievable.
