Tucson, Ariz. (13 News) – The second murder trial of convicted child murderer Christopher Clements continued on Tuesday, Feb. 28, with more expert testimony.
For more on Tuesday’s Witnesses, watch the video above or scroll down for the section labeled “Day 9: More Witnesses and National Rest.”
Background
Clements faces kidnapping and murder charges in connection with the disappearance and death of Isabel Celis in Tucson in 2012.
The case quickly gained national attention as Isabelle went missing from her bedroom more than a decade ago and communities in southern Arizona searched for her.
Despite some leads, the incident remained cool until 2017. That’s when Clements’ fiancé called the FBI, and she told him that Clements knew where Isabel was buried.
A month later, Clements led investigators to search for Isabel’s body in a desert area near the West Avra Valley and North Trico roads in rural Pima County.
Clements, who is pleading not guilty to the charges, said he had nothing to do with Isabel’s death. He claims he knew only the location, not who did it.
A year later, Clements was indicted in connection with the deaths of Isabel and Maribel Gonzalez. Maribel’s body was found in the same area as Isabel’s.
last year, Clements is Convicted of Kidnapping and Murder of Maribel Gonzalez and was sentenced to life imprisonment. On June 3, 2014, at the age of 13, Maribel went missing while walking to a friend’s house. A few days later, her body was found in a desert area near the road between Toriko and Avra Valley.
Clements has already served 35 years in prison for the Maricopa County robbery.
Day 9: More Witnesses and State Rest
Tuesday’s testimony lexis nexis and creator ZX. Both provide software to help law enforcement and government agencies track cell data.
Clements’ attorney, Eric Kessler, asked Ray a series of questions about the software law enforcement and government agencies use to help track cell data.
“It’s not a foolproof system,” says Kessler.
“You are right,” Ray replied.
Kessler then asked about tracking accuracy.
“Wasn’t there a situation where you just guessed cell phone coverage and found out cell phone wasn’t in that area?” Kessler asked.
“Not necessarily me,” Ray testified. “We’ve seen it happen to users from time to time.”
Kessler also questioned the accuracy of the tower’s range estimate, saying it was a slide of a phone ping made by the Tucson Police Department before Ray agreed to cooperate with the investigation. showed. Although they appear to cover a wider area, they do not, like Ray, cover the area where Isabel’s remains were found.
When asked by state attorneys if he could explain why all the data isn’t accurate, Ray says that prior to 2019, the algorithms were different, which prevented them from mapping the sector. Since 2019, Ray says the range has become more accurate.
After lunch, the defense pleaded not guilty to all charges, which Judge James Marner denied.
The state put its claims to rest, and now it was the defense’s turn to begin questioning witnesses.
Closing arguments may begin tomorrow.
