Felton native Tyler Gilbert shines in latest start for Arizona Diamondbacks

Arizona starter Tyler Gilbert pitched 5 2/3 innings scoreless to end with the lead, but the decision was down as the Colorado Rockies rallied to a 3-2 victory over the Diamondbacks in Phoenix on Sunday. It was not.

Felton-born Gilbert made history last year with a no-hitter in his first start in MLB, but found himself back in the minors after a poor start to the season.

He has been outstanding since being called up on July 5th. The 6-foot-3-inch, 223-pound left-hander gave up three hits and one walk as he hit the Rockies. He dropped his season ERA to 5.33 with one hitter and one strikeout.

Gilbert will return home when the Diamondbacks (38-48) take on the hosts San Francisco Giants (43-41) at Oracle Park in a three-game series that begins at 6:45 p.m. on Monday.

Under Armor Sunset Tour: Nicky Hirtz, 27, is a professional non-binary runner from Aptos who finished in just under two minutes in the women’s 800m race on Saturday’s Under Armor Sunset Tour in Los Angeles.

They finished fifth in 2:01.33.

WSL Challenger Series: Santa Cruz’s Jon Mel finished 17th at the Barito Pro in South Africa, the World Surf League’s third Challenger Series event of the season, finishing 56th with 1,900 points from unranked.

Rio Huayda of Indonesia took first place with Sunday’s win and amassed 10,000 points. He has 20,750 on the season.

At the end of the 8-event CS season, the top 10 surfers automatically qualify for the 2023 Championship Tour.

WSL Championship Tour: Santa Cruz’s Nat Young will compete in Heat 4 of the opening round of the WSL’s Corona Open J-Bay. The contest window begins on Tuesday and runs through July 21st in Jeffreys Bay, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Young, tied for No. 16 across eight events in the Championship Tour season rankings, will face Brazil’s No. 1 Filipe Toledo and South Africa’s Josh Faulkner in the opening round.

The top five surfers in the CT rankings at the end of the Outerknown Tahiti Pro August 11-21 will advance to Event No. 11, the Rip Curl WSL Finals, September 8-16 at Lower Trestles in San Clemente. Qualify.
