Authorities now plan to prosecute students for minors possessing firearms and for interfering or obstructing educational institutions. Both are felonies, the Pinal County Attorney’s Office announced Monday.
The Queen Creek Police Department had previously pressured the parents to indict them, saying they should be charged with complicity in juvenile delinquency. Police said they believed it wasn’t enough for the parents to secure weapons in their homes to deter their children from using them.
County Attorney’s Office officials ultimately decided not to press charges against the parents. County officials said there was “no reasonable chance of conviction” against the parents.
Kent Volkmer County Attorney said, “Given the inherent dangers associated with having guns on school campuses, the PCAO must take this seriously.” It’s important to understand that our focus is on remediation and that’s our focus.”
The attorney’s office emphasized that the indictment was merely an accusation and that the defendant was presumed innocent until proven guilty.
