Arizona Spelling Bee won by Karen Opoku-Appoh

PHOENIX — For the winning 13-year-old boy from Marana, the word ‘passing’ was a triumphant journey. Arizona Spelling Bee Phoenix Saturday.

Thirteen-year-old Karen Opoku-Appoh, who attends Marana Middle School in Pima County, won the event. The 8th graders won the competition by spelling the word “passage”.

Several students from the Valley area also won prizes at the spelling bee.

The second place winner was Opal Mishra, a sixth grade student at Chandler’s Basha Accelerated Middle School.

The 3rd place award went to Sai Manvik Marreddi, an 8th grade student at Explorer Middle School in Paradise Valley.

Regina Rascon, a seventh grader at Bogle Middle School in Chandler, came in fourth.

Fifth place went to Alrick James, a senior at the Estrella Foothills Global Academy.

This year is the 25th year of the competition.
