With a permanent cast of local drag queens and a rotating cast of suburban queens, The Takeover, hosted by Anya C. Mann and DJ Bear Cole, is a monthly event held on the first Friday of each month at the Yucca North Stage. With a mere $5 admission fee that is donated to charity, these queens work with nothing but tips, give back to their communities, and provide a fun night of entertainment for the town.

Zane Jacobs, president-elect of Flagstaff Pride, said the monthly event has gained recognition statewide since its inception. Combining performances by the famous and award-winning Queen of Flagstaff and welcoming out-of-towners, the show has a recipe for success. This show brings the queen.

“We brought in four out-of-town queens and four local queens and put them together,” Jacobs said. “These out-of-town queens have taken over Flagstaff, including the flagstaff queen who is now killing it. Out-of-town queens come from all over the world, some from Tucson.” If there’s one from Denver, and a few last month from Las Vegas, they’re from all over the world, and our show is becoming more and more popular. , that people who can’t go to the big cities can see these queens here in Flagstaff, which is really cool.”

Admission fees are donated to various charities each month. Jacobs said he donated the doors of his past shows to Colorado survivors such as Club Q, the Literacy Center and Creative His Flagstaff. This month, admission returns to Flagstaff to his Pride to sponsor Queens performing at Phoenix Pride.

“Flagstaff has a lot of drag shows, which is amazing. I like it because you want to see it everywhere. But our drag shows are very different,” Jacobs said. . “Our event is a non-profit event. We donate the entire door. “In the past, we’ve had drag kings and non-binary entertainers. It’s not just drag queens,” says Zane. “Every month is different. No two shows are the same, so it’s worth coming every month.”

Yucca North is making a name for itself as the new Flagstaff venue opened in 2020 during the pandemic. From the beginning, the Yucca North team and manager Chloe Ramsey have focused on bringing in the entire Flagstaff community by booking entertainment of all kinds.

“We do indie shows, metal shows, hip-hop, drag shows, DJ shows,” Ramsey said. “Diversity here is really important to us. We are not just a punk rock bar, we are not just a metal bar, we are not just a dive bar. We want our community to come here, feel welcome, and enjoy the entertainment.”

Going forward, Yucca North and Flagstaff Pride will continue their partnership with TakeOver on the first Friday of each month. Yucca North will host an official Flagstaff Pride after-party in June. Jacobs and his team have been working hard to plan Pride in the Pines for June 17th and his 18th. For the first time in its history, Pride in the Pines will parade in downtown Flagstaff.

“Pride will grow and evolve throughout that weekend,” Jacobs said. “We’ll have a parade, we’ll do a bar crawl, we’ll do an event, and after the party we’ll have a little drag show in every bar in Flagstaff. will happen.”
