Yavapai County (3TV/CBS 5) — Officials confirmed an EF-1 tornado hit northern Arizona, damaging homes Monday afternoon. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said eight to 10 of her homes in the Junipine Estates community, eight miles north of Williams, were damaged. The National Weather Service reported winds ranging from 86 to 110 miles per hour in the area.
Trees were broken and uprooted in rural areas, and parts of houses and huts were scattered across roads and gardens. Residents said the tornado struck around 1:30 pm. She says the wooden shed was torn, the porch was half gone, the house was displaced half a foot, and the walls were cracked. Schmidt said one wall was leaning to the side and the beam was about to go through the ceiling, she added.
Schmidt says the moment the tornado hit was intense. “The house wouldn’t stop shaking. It felt like an eternity, but then it started moving and I could feel it and I was like, ‘Oh my God,'” she said. is a mess and I’m so sad because I worked so hard to build this as it used to be.”
She has lived in the area for 17 years and says she has seen storm buildings. “I started to see the wind getting stronger and stronger and the house started shaking. At the same time I thought it was an earthquake and I couldn’t see out the window,” she explained. Ms. Schmidt added that the water tank was gone, the chicken coop was torn apart, shingles were torn from the house, and the garage was leaking water. She is currently cleaning up the damage and picking up the debris, among other things.
Strong thunderstorms hit several areas of northern Arizona, including Prescott and northwest Coconino County.
The Red Cross opened a shelter at Williams High School for Junipine Estates residents displaced by the tornado. Those affected can head to Williams at 636 South 7th Street.
