A deputy at the La Paz County Sheriff’s Office committed suicide, according to Sheriff William Ponce. Lieutenant William Poindexter, who served in this division for his 31 years, died in his mid-February. Last Wednesday, a procession was held around the town of Parker to honor him.
At the La Paz County Board of Supervisors on February 21, Ponce said Poindexter is the law enforcement leader in his department.
“Lt. Bill Poindexter died this weekend. He took his own life,” Ponce told the board. “We are grieving and when you see our people sinking, you know we are going through some tough times because of that.”
Poindexter was well-known within the department, training new officers and running a multi-agency drug task force that sought to rid the community of dangerous drugs by intercepting sales.

“Bill and Patty got married in 1998. He became the father of Patty’s two young children, Tony and Lori. District 2 Supervisor Duce Minor addressed the community’s grief in a formal call to the conference.
“We have lost a good man who gave so many years of his life to serve and protect our community,” Minor prayed aloud.
