Graham County – A Safford man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a shooting that occurred during a domestic incident that law enforcement deemed a justifiable homicide.
Derek Christopher Farrar, 40, died Wednesday after being shot by his stepfather at his residence on the 400 block of W. Rustler Road just north of Swift Trail Junction.・Transported to Graham Regional Medical Center. Farah was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Another injured person, 74-year-old Stan French, was first treated at MGRMC for facial injuries and then flown to Banner at UMC Tucson for further treatment. His medical information has not been updated since he arrived at UMC.
A preliminary investigation by the Graham County Sheriff’s Office found that Farah, who had received a protection order from the Frenchman, forced his way into the Frenchman’s residence and assaulted him. During the incident, French retrieved a handgun and fatally shot Farah. A week before his fatal incident, Farar was found guilty of trespassing, threats or intimidation, criminal damages, and failure to comply with a court order in connection with an ongoing dispute with his stepfather. The Pima County coroner’s office is scheduled to perform an autopsy on Farrar’s body on Thursday.
An investigation is ongoing, but preliminary indications from law enforcement and prosecutors suggest the shooting was legitimate self-defense and no charges are likely to be filed at this time.
