A Tucson man died Friday in a parking lot on University Boulevard in Tucson after an attempted robbery ended in a fatal shooting, police said.
Tucson police responded to reports of a shooting near Seventh Avenue and East University Boulevard at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Witnesses reported that a man, later identified as 20-year-old Jesus Romero, suffered an apparent gunshot wound in his car, police said.
A bystander in the parking lot reportedly attempted first aid on Romero but was unsuccessful.
Homicide investigators later learned that the shooting occurred as a result of an attempted robbery. According to the sergeant, Romero and Makenzie Jamin, the woman who was with Romero at the time of his death, reportedly teamed up with another adult man to plan to rob him at a local park. TPD spokesperson David Fritsch said:
“A struggle ensued in the course of the attempted robbery when Mr. Romero was struck by gunshots,” Fritsch said in a press release Monday.
Police said the man fled the scene before police arrived, and Romero and Jamin drove out of the park before hitting a curb and pulling into a parking lot at 7 E. University Blvd.
Jamin was arrested and imprisoned in the Pima County Jail on first-degree murder charges. According to Fritsch, Jamin is being held on $500,000 bail.
The murder investigation remains unsolved. Detectives are asking anyone with information about this investigation to remain anonymous by calling 88-CRIME or at 9-1-1.
