SAFORD — Safford City Council voted unanimously on Monday to join the second round of settlements over the opioid crisis.

A new settlement agreement negotiated by the state involves opioid dispensers such as Walmart, Walgreens, Teva, Allergan and CVS.

“This agreement is very similar to previous agreements,” said Mayor John Cassella. “For reference, he’s received $58,000 so far from his first contract. Those money’s just starting to get to the county. They’re going through the county and being distributed to us.”

The first settlement agreement was with an opioid manufacturer and distributor. The national settlement totaled $26 billion, with Arizona receiving approximately $542 million over his 18 years.

Under the One Arizona Plan, cities, towns and counties will receive 56% of the funds and the state will receive 44%, all of which will be used for the Opioid Relief Program.

The council’s agreement to join the settlement means the city is barred from taking further action against opioid manufacturers, distributors and now dispensers.
