The Pima College softball team swept its ACCAC Division I opponents for the second straight Saturday at Arizona Western College in Yuma.
Sophomore Mia Casaday (Tanque Verde HS) put a big spark on the offense as they finished the day 5-8 with 7 RBIs and 1 run against the Arizona Westerns (22-26, 21-15). Sophomore Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro) and Alisandra Montiel (Jolla) I won the circle.
Game 1: Pima 16, Arizona Western 4 (5 innings)
The Aztecs (27-16, 23-11 in ACCAC) used a nine-run four inning to take control and earn their first game victory.
freshman Mina Chacon (Tucson High School) After scoring in his sophomore year, he hit a three-run homer to put the Aztecs up 3-0. Ellis Munoz (Salpointe Catholic) and a new student Camila Zepeda (Tucson).
Winning 4–0 in the third inning, the Aztecs hit back-to-back RBI doubles off the freshmen. Mallory Zirinski Lobel (Sahuarita) 2nd grade Stephanie Tapia to make it 6-0. Casaday also hit an RBI single in the inning to put the Pima up 7–0.
Zylinski-Wrobel, Casadei and Zepeda each had two-run hits in the fourth.
Casaday went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and 1 run, while Chacon went 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Zylinski-Wrobel went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and he scored 2 runs. Muñoz had an RBI and two runs scored to make him 3-for-2.Tapia finished 1-for-3 with his 1-RBI and 2-RBIs, making him a freshman Madison Firman-Moreno (Sabino) has 2 runs, 2 walks and 1 RBI.
Castro (11-5) pitched all five innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs (4 ERAs), 2 strikeouts and 4 walks for his third straight Searcy win.
Game 2: Pima 6, Arizona West 5 (8 innings)
The Aztecs rallied and completed the sweep with a win in extra innings.
Chacon broke the tie in the eighth inning with a wild pitch.Tapia drew walks and pinch runners Jazzlyn Felix (Wilcox) replaced her on a base pass. With two outs, Casaday hit an RBI single to plate Felix, making it 6–4.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Matador had two runners out with no outs. Montiel struck out, but the next batter hit an RBI double.Matador tried to tie match but freshman Jasmine Majonica (Flowing Wells) threw a bullet at Zylinski-Wrobel, who made the tag and put the second runner out at home plate while maintaining a one-run lead.
Montiel skipped the next batter to end the game.
The Aztecs trailed 4–1 after three innings, but started the rally in the top of the four. Tapia pulled his walk off the lead and Firman Moreno hit a double. Tapia scored on an error and Firman Moreno scored on Casaday’s groundout. The Arizona Western’s lead he narrowed to 4-3.
Casaday hit a game-tying RBI single in the sixth to drive in Majonica to help set up the extra inning.
Casaday also got an RBI double in the second inning as he finished 4-for-3 with 4 RBIs. Tapia drew his four walks and scored two runs in the game. Fillman-Moreno scored as he went 1-2.
Montiel (2 wins, 3 losses) allowed 11 hits, 3 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 4 runs (3 earned runs), and won the game after pitching a complete game.
The Aztecs play Gateway Community College in Mesa on Tuesday. 1st game starts at 1pm
baseball
The Pima baseball team (36-12) sat out of ACCAC conference play on Saturday as they hosted Post Grad Sports Baseball at West Campus Azteca Field.
freshman Elijah Reeves (Marana) closed out the day with a 3-7 score with 2 RBIs and 2 runs.fellow freshmen Jonte Hennessy He went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs, 3 runs and 2 walks. Sophomore Matt Romero wins in relief in his first game and freshman year Alessandro Castro (Pushridge) shut out five innings to win the second game.
Game 1: Pima 8, Post Grad Sports Baseball 3: The Aztecs took the lead by 7 runs in the 4th inning and won the first game.
Reeves tied the game with an RBI single and got a freshman Antonio Avila, led the inning with a base. Sophomore Andrew Maxwell Scoring on a wild pitch, Aztecs got 3 straight RBI singles from sophomore year Hunter Feildfreshman Benji Cazares (Tucson High School) and sophomore Braden mondo (Cienega) Make it 6-2. Mondeau scored on a passed ball to close out the inning as Avila pulled the bases loaded and Pima took an 8–2 lead on him.
Reeves finished the game 2-for-4 in RBIs and runs. Feild went 1-for-3 in RBIs and runs, while Cazares went 1-for-4 in RBIs and runs. Mondeau finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Avila and Maxwell each drew two walks and scored one run.
Romero pitched three innings, allowing four strikeouts on four hits and allowing two runs (no runs) on one walk to take the win in relief.
Game 2: Pima 13, Post Grad Sports Baseball 0 (7 innings):
The Aztecs scored in the first four innings while Castro did his job on the mound.
Castro emerged victorious after pitching five innings, allowing just one hit with nine strikeouts and no walks.
At 7-0, the Aztecs scored five goals in four frames.
Hennessy hit an RBI single to win the sophomore season Caden Stremik And with 2 out, sophomore Luis Garcia (Salpointe) hit a two-run RBI single to make it 12-0.freshman David Shackleford and sophomore Rocco Gump Scored early in the inning.
Hennessey hit an RBI double in the third inning to finish 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Stremik hit a two-run RBI single in the first inning to finish 4–2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.Garcia, a freshman, had three RBIs, two runs and two walks as he closed out the game 1-3. Brandt Kroger Hitting a RBI double in the first inning, with 2 RBIs and 2 walks, 2 hits per at bat. Reeves went 1-for-3 in RBIs and runs, while Shackleford went 2-for-4 in RBIs and two runs scored.
Aztecs will return to West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday when it hosts Cochise College at the ACCAC doubleheader. The first pitch is at noon.
Athletics
Pima College’s men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Mesa Outdoor Invitational in Mesa on Friday.
The Aztecs achieved five first-place finishes in the competition.
The 12th place Aztec women’s team won three first places.
freshman Trinity Betea Won the 400m with a season best time of 57.22. Her previous best was her 58.66 set with her NAU tune-up during her season indoors. Her national qualifying time was 56.34 seconds.
freshman Brooke Peterson He won first place in the pole vault with a mark of 3.50 meters (11 feet, 5.75 inches). Outdoors Her best record during her season was 3.68m (12-0.75).
freshman Tiana Moseley She finished with a mark of 10.99 meters (36-0.75), thus securing the top spot in the triple jump. Her best record at the event is her 11.33m (37-2.25) and she is inching closer to her national qualifying mark of 11.64m.
The 11th place Aztec men’s team produced two first place finishers.
Sophomore Trey Tintinger He placed first in a jump of 2.07 meters (6-9.50), matching his highest high jump feat of the outdoor season.
Sophomore Joshua Bowen A throw of 47.70 meters (156-6) rounded out the first javelin.He set the national qualifier at last month’s GCU Invitational at 54.04m (177-3)
The Aztecs will compete in the final regular-season competition on Friday and Saturday at the Canyon Invitational at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.
