The GMAC Track and Field Championships once again provided an opportunity to see multiple Miami-Dade County teams and athletes vie for supremacy one month before vying for the coveted state championship.
One of the more competitive rivalries continues to be that between Columbus and Northwestern University on the boys’ side.
The two teams clashed again on Saturday at Toraz Powell Stadium before the Explorers won another county title with 168 points. The Bulls finished with his 127 points and earned the runner-up spot.
Northwestern’s women continued to dominate, winning their fourth straight GMAC title and finishing 11th in the past 12 counties with 231 points, well ahead of runner-up Goleman’s 55 points.
The Bulls women dominated all three relays by winning the 3,200m relay in 9:48.22.
Junior Shakina Torresvant led Northwestern University with a time of 1:02.79 in the triple jump 11.50 meters and 400 hurdles.
Sophomore sprinter Kimora Kinsey won the 100m with a time of 12.40 seconds and was part of the winning 400m and 1,600m relays. When won, Northwestern won another championship in the field event.
Other standout performances included junior goalman field athlete Lydia Kentis, who won both the discus and javelin championships. Kentis’ winning throw in the discus she threw 45.42 meters and in the javelin she threw 30.68 meters.
Columbus won three individual titles in field events and won the 400m relay with a time of 41.36 seconds. Her sophomore Shaddai Carter (triple jump) and her Darriel Harper (long jump) each won a gold medal, while her junior year girlfriend Amari Marti won the pole vault.
Northwestern made a big push led by the winning 1,600m and 3,200m relay teams. Seniors Merlin Cochrane (100m) and Daniel Jean-Charles (800m) and junior Devin Jones (400 hurdles) each won individual titles.
Axel Fink of Mourning and Mekhi Gamons of Hialeah-Miami Lakes were men’s double winners respectively.
Senior Gammons won the 200m in 21.37 seconds and the 400m in 47.25 seconds, and was a repeat county champion.
Junior Fink won the title in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races with times of 4:27.83 and 10:07.85 respectively.
Jackson’s Byron Holt was also the GMAC champion in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.08 seconds.
