The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team has released body camera footage of a police-involved shooting in February.
In a briefing shared by PRCIT, a Tucson Police Department officer said: answered the call Shortly after 1:30 am on February 14th, she reported a mental health crisis.
A mental health professional called TPD to warn about a man who threatened his life and may be in possession of a firearm. They said he talked to the man for nearly half an hour before contacting TPD.
At one point during a mental health professional’s conversation with the man in question, they reported hearing what sounded like gunshots.
911 Caller: “I am a crisis counselor at 988 in Alameda County, California.
“I’m calling because I had a three-way call from a friend in Arizona and someone in California.
“A friend was reporting suicidal thoughts and having a gun. The phone hung up so you might believe you heard a gunshot.”
Officers from Operations Division East were then dispatched to E. Calle Jupiter’s home to try and find the man. he holds a firearm
A trained hostage-negotiating sergeant contacted the man on his mobile phone and spoke with him for nearly 15 minutes.
However, according to the briefing, the man refused to surrender the gun and continued walking down the street.At that point, Officer Barrie Pedersen, an 18-year veteran of police officers, fired a single shot, hitting the man.
Body camera footage shows officers approaching the man, identified as 29-year-old Jack Taylor. Found a pistol and bullet casings.
Taylor was taken to a local hospital, but his injuries were not life-threatening. It is unclear if he will be charged in connection with this incident.
PCSD and Oro Valley Police are conducting a criminal investigation, and TPD is evaluating whether the shooting violates police policy.
